Statement from the SafeHouse Center Board of Directors

As your representatives, providing governance to SafeHouse Center, we want to update our community on the work of the organization.

The best interests of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault are the most important priority of SafeHouse Center. Their needs always come first.

We want to be clear that SafeHouse is open to serve, and is actively meeting the needs of survivors every day, around the clock. In fact, between October 3 and November 3, SafeHouse has responded to 463 calls on our emergency HelpLine, provided the support of an advocate to 307 emergency requests, provided legal support to 332 survivors, and sheltered 12 residents, despite staff reductions during the Covid-19 pandemic. More data appears in the chart below.

Since 1978, SafeHouse Center has served thousands of survivors, while having its financial records scrutinized by independent auditors. In 2021, SafeHouse Center has received an outstanding quality assurance review from the Michigan Division of Victim Services.

As you may know, in recent months, the Board became aware of allegations about SafeHouse Center. We take all allegations seriously and will continue to work with transparency to serve survivors, as we hold SafeHouse to the very highest standards. In September, the Board engaged an independent investigator to review the allegations. This independent review is underway. When the investigator completes that work, we will share the results with the community.

Public confidence in SafeHouse Center is essential to fulfilling its mission to effectively serve survivors. We appreciate your support as we oversee the organization.

Sincerely,
Board of Directors
SafeHouse Center
