Raising Awareness

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)

Sexual Assault is the most underreported crime in the US, even though someone is assaulted every 73 seconds in America.

In the late 1990s, advocates began coordinating activities on a regular basis throughout the month of April to promote an idea for a nationally recognized month for sexual violence awareness. Over time, sexual assault awareness activities expanded to include the issue of sexual violence against men and men’s participation in ending sexual violence.

SAAM was first observed nationally in April 2001 and has been continuing on ever since.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month hopes to increase awareness about the implications of sexual assault in our community and promote activism to end this pervasive social problem. It is important that we raise awareness so that survivors do not feel alone and know that support is available.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM)

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) was launched nationwide in October 1987 as a way to connect and unite individuals and organizations working on domestic violence issues while raising awareness for those issues. Over the past 30+ years, much progress has been made to support domestic violence victims and survivors, to hold abusers accountable, and to create and update legislation to further those goals.

During SAAM and DVAM we encourage you to check out local and national events to show your support and help raise awareness. If you would like to partner with SafeHouse for a presentation, a fundraising or other type or awareness event please contact us!
