October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

We take time in October to bring awareness to domestic violence. We all have a role in promoting healthy relationships and building a healthy community. Read on to see how you can get involved with SafeHouse Center, our advocates, supporters, and volunteers to help support survivors in our own community.

Wear purple this Thursday, Oct. 20th in observation of Domestic Violence Awareness Day

Take a photo of yourself wearing something purple while holding one of our printable signs and share it on social media with the hashtags
#PurpleThursday and #DVAM2022.

Use your post as a conversation starter and
share why ending domestic violence is important to YOU.

Don’t forget to tag us – @SafeHouseCenter

Other ways you can participate this month:

  1. Educate yourself. Would you know if a friend was being abused? By the time bruises appear, abuse may have been going on for years. Know the warning signs.

  2. Know what to do. If a friend of loved one is being abused there are some steps you can follow. Of course you can always call SafeHouse Center and talk to one of our trained advocates at (734) 995-5444.

  3. If a friend confides in you. Don’t judge the decisions they have made. Don’t judge their partner. DON’T TRY TO OFFER ADVICE as to how to “fix” their partner or “fix” the situation. Abuse is a complex situation, and both the victim and abuser need professional assistance and counseling. What you should do is help your friend or loved one recognize the abuse that has occurred, take the abuse seriously, realize it is not his or her fault, and most importantly, seek professional help.
